About RAMS
Changing the conversation around risk governance
We monitor traditional and non-traditional risks to the public sector, private sector, and civil society — bridging the gap between social, scientific, and quantitative modelling, with an emphasis on mitigation.
01Our approach
Diversity is the methodology
Threats and opportunities in a globalized world are multifaceted, borderless, and indiscriminate. No single discipline reads them correctly on its own. Our approach hinges on the diversity of identity, expertise, and opinion within RAMS — policy students alongside finance students, qualitative judgment alongside quantitative models.
We are committed to building an inclusive environment for all our members, across both the MGA and MPP programs, in first and second year alike.
02History
Nine years in the making
- 2017
Founded at the Munk School
A group of Munk School students, alumni, and faculty create the Global Risk Observatory (GRO) to help students think about risk in a structured, analytical way.
- 2017–19
Projects & expert events
Members collaborate on real-world risk management problems requested by partner companies and host expert speakers from organizations such as Manulife.
- Spring 2025
Inaugural case competition
The first geopolitical risk case competition runs with Rotman and RBC — and teaches a hard lesson about scheduling against exam season.
- Fall 2025
Second edition, 56 competitors
Rescheduled to November, the competition draws 39 Munk and 17 Rotman students. Winners go on to summer internships at RBC.
- 2026–27
A new name, official status
The club returns as a formal Student Leadership Initiative under a new name — the Risk Association at the Munk School (RAMS) — now open to MPP students and second-years, with faculty backing and a full season of programming.
